Things Are Not Always As They Seem
You never know what happened in someone's day before you came into it - ABBA's 1982 song, "The Day Before You Came"
Instagram fed me up a video of folks poking fun at a smart car parallel parker. There appeared to be a ton of room between the nearest parked cars, yet the car was being parallel-parked. I wish I could find the post again, because if you saw it, you would giggle a little and wonder why on earth someone would go through the parking gymnastics of pulling ahead and then backing into a wide-open spot. I know I did.
Later, I thought about it a little, and I mused that there was another answer to the video silliness. Rather than the driver being a ding dong, I realized he/she was probably looking ahead and saw that the only open parking spaces were behind them. They were likely not parallel parking; they were backing into the closest open spot!
Whether in business or in life, ask questions (discovery forms and file reviews), listen, and reserve judgment.
You never know what someone’s experience is, what shaped them in the minutes, days, years and lifetimes before you came into their world. So be calm, be kind and be open to alternate explanations.
Slide note: If you are not adept at backing out, you should be backing in. Actually, there are only rare exceptions to not backing your vehicle in! And if you don’t take advantage of a pull-through, you are probably an alien.
