Cloud Tech, Catastrophes, and the Case for a Correct Tech Stack

“The cloud is not just a place to store your data; it's a new way to do computing." - Paul Maritz

The title of the blog - that’s a lot of “C”s 😂😂😂

You know those moments where you shake your head at your silly self? Yeah… I had one of those recently. I was a ding-dong and fried my laptop. It was totally my fault, and I did it in such a silly way that I’m not going to share how.

Thankfully, I have “stupid insurance” (my term, not their’s…). So off my laptop went to the tech store, where I was assured it would be fixed or replaced. They even gave me a loaner. A loaner that was… well… let’s just say it was the sloth of the computer world. But I thought, No problem! It’s only “three to five days”, I’ll stick it out with the slug.

Fast forward three weeks (yes, three), and I’m still being “one-to-three-dayed” to death.

I finally cracked

I took my frustrated self back to the store, returned the loaner and bought a new laptop. At first, I told myself I’d return it when my original one came back. But then I realized… nope. It’s staying. Now I have a backup. If I am a computer ding dong again, I’ll be ready.

The 10-Minute Setup

Here’s where cloud technology showed its magicalness. The very first thing I did was grab my USB key and install 1Password (I have my emergency kit on the USB, with redacted info that I know by heart). 1Password is my critical app for linking to everything else. From there, it was bada-boom, badda-bing; I logged back into my three main Chrome profiles:

  • Accounting

  • Productivity

  • Website

Within minutes, I was back to 99% operational. A couple of desktop apps later (Facebook Messenger, Slack, Stream Deck, WhatsApp), and I was fully up and running.

Why This Matters for Your Tech Stack

This whole ordeal reinforced exactly why keeping your tech stack clean, cloud-based and current is a winner (again with the “Cs):

  • Catastrophe Planning

    • You’re never truly down and out

  • Data Location Redundancy

    • If one device fails, you’re still protected

  • Ease

    • Switching devices becomes painless

  • Efficiency

    • No hours wasted installing, updating, or hunting for files

Whether you’re running a business, managing clients, or just keeping your life organized:

  1. Invest in the right equipment

    • I honestly never knew a computer could be so slow, but I now appreciate how investing in a good computer is critical

  2. Keep your tech stack clean and lean

    • It will ease getting back up and running, and every app you have opens the door to another security risk

  3. Invest and optimize your cloud technology

    • This streamlines day-to-day operations and mitigates downtime

Your future self will thank you when disaster strikes, and your here-and-now self will bask in the efficiency glory of the right tech and processes!
